In Circleville, Ohio, two friends boasted in Facebook posts about their most-recent pranks, including covering a stop sign in plastic wrap so that it was nearly invisible to motorists.
A prosecutor says the posts quickly disappeared once a woman drove past the obscured stop sign and into the path of another car, leaving her critically injured and her sister dead. This is so sad. Jeanne Shea is currently in Grant Medical Center in Columbus. Surgeons are preparing to amputate one of her legs above the knee. Shea has not been told of her sister’s death.
Pickaway County Sheriff Dwight Radcliff said his office was flooded with calls from people reporting the Facebook posts once word spread about the circumstances of Spangler’s death.
Aside from the deadly prank is the fact that it went ignored. ABC6/Fox28 News learned Monday that a dispatcher at the Sheriff’s Department knew the stop sign was unreadable and did nothing about it. Cpl. Kimberly Chapman, who worked in dispatch, received two calls about the sign being covered but did not report it to the Ohio Department of Transportation. She has been fired.
